Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the auspicious beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. Celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik, this day is dedicated to invoking the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), Lord Kubera (treasurer of wealth), and Lord Dhanvantari (the physician of the gods associated with health and vitality).

Performing Dhanteras Puja during Pradosh Kaal while a fixed Lagna (Vrishabha Kaal) prevails is considered most auspicious, ensuring steady wealth and prosperity in the household.
Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi
1. Purification & Altar Setup
- Clean the house thoroughly, especially the main entrance and the puja area.
- Lay a clean red or yellow cloth on a wooden platform (chowki).
- Place the idols or images of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari.
2. Kalash Sthapana
- Fill a copper or brass pot (Kalash) with clean water, Gangajal, a coin, betel nut (supari), and rice grains.
- Place mango leaves around the rim and place a coconut wrapped in a red cloth or sacred thread (moli) on top.
3. Invocations & Offerings
- Lord Ganesha: Begin by worshiping Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles. Offer him kumkum, haldi, flowers, and sweets.
- Lord Dhanvantari: Pray for disease-free health and vitality. Offer flowers, tulsi leaves, and yellow sweets.
- Goddess Lakshmi & Lord Kubera: Offer lotus flowers, red cloth, akshat (unbroken rice), dhoop, deep, and bhog (sweets, fruits, or kheer).
- Sanctify Purchased Items: Place any newly bought gold, silver, brass utensils, or business account books on the altar to be blessed during the puja.
4. Aarti and Mantras
- Chant the Lakshmi Mantra (“Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Shreem Mahalakshmaye Namah”) and Kubera Mantra (“Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye Namah”).
- Perform the aarti using a lit diya with pure ghee and camphor.
5. Yama Deepam (Deep Daan)
- After the main evening puja, light a four-faced (chaumukha) earthen diya filled with mustard oil.
- Place it outside the main entrance facing south (the direction of Lord Yama) to protect the household from premature death and negative energies.
