Description

Govatsa Dwadashi (also celebrated as Vasu Baras, Vagh Baras, or Bachh Baras) marks the auspicious beginning of the Diwali festivities. Observed on the Dwadashi Tithi (12th day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin/Kartik, this sacred day is dedicated to venerating cows and their calves as earthly representations of the divine wish-fulfilling cow, Kamadhenu, and her daughter Nandini.

Significance of the Festival

  • Symbol of Nurturing & Abundance: In Hindu tradition, cows embody selflessness, motherly care, and prosperity. Worshiping them welcomes positive spiritual energy and gratitude into the home.
  • Nandini Vrat for Family Well-Being: Mothers observe the Nandini Vrat (fast) to pray for the longevity, good health, and success of their children.
  • Association with Lord Krishna: As the divine protector of cows (Govinda/Gopala), Lord Krishna’s grace is invoked alongside cow worship to dispel obstacles and bring peace.
  • Settling Debts (Vagh Baras): In business communities across Gujarat and western India, this day also signifies clearing financial ledgers and debts before starting fresh accounts during Diwali.

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

  • Purification: Take a ritual bath early in the morning and wear clean, traditional attire.
  • Preparing the Cow & Calf: Bathe a cow and its calf with pure water. If a live cow is unavailable, worship clay, silver, or brass idols of a cow and calf placed on a decorated wooden chowki.
  • Tilak & Shringar: Apply sandalwood paste, turmeric (haldi), and vermilion (kumkum) on their foreheads. Drape flower garlands and clean cloth over them.
  • Sacred Offerings: Offer fresh green grass, soaked/sprouted moong dal, and wheat preparations to the cow and calf.
  • Aarti & Circumambulation: Light a ghee diya and incense sticks, chant Krishna mantras, and perform parikrama (circumambulation) around the cow. Offer Arghya (water with unbroken rice and flowers).
  • Fasting Guidelines: Devotees observing the fast traditionally abstain from consuming cow milk, curd, and ghee on this day, as well as wheat-fried items, eating only a single sattvic meal in the evening.
